Housing is the solution to homelessness. And, conveniently, the right to decent housing is laid down in the Belgian Constitution. In 2020 there were 5,000 homeless and badly housed people in Brussels, and successive crises made the situation even worse. How is that possible?

Access to affordable, durable homes of good quality is key to the abolition of homelessness. In this context, the Brussels government must take structural measures to get people off the street. That’s why Street Nurses, in the run-up to the 2024 elections, advocates the introduction of a quota to facilitate housing access for homeless people.

This year Street Nurses participates in the Housing Action Day movement, and our team will be present at the demonstrations on 26 March 2023, both in Brussels and Ghent. Because without durable and affordable homes there will never come an end to homelessness. That must change. Are you in?

In 2021 Street Nurses started a project with therapy dogs. Gaëlle, nurse, and her dog Walt visited people rehoused by Street Nurses. Since then, they proved useful, and now we have four dogs as “colleagues”.

At the beginning of 2023, Street Nurses is conducting a crowdfunding campaign to update and publish its handbook “Sortir de la rue » (which translates to “Leaving the street behind”). What is its purpose and why is it so important to us that it is published? Here's some insight!

The Gazette is a publication coordinated by the Affiliation team that is currently hosted by Street Nurses and which organises joint activities to 5 Housing First projects in Brussels to promote the social re-affiliation of tenants. We are pleased to give you a small glimpse of it in this article! 

In 2013 the first project of Housing First was set up in Brussels, inspired by American projects under that name. Today, almost 10 years later, more than 200 people in our capital city benefitted from this project. Thanks to support teams and their partners in the housing sector, they again found appropriate and affordable homes of their own. Brussels Housing First is growing. More and more new projects are being set up - and, of course, we strive to strengthen this development.

Through its crowdfunding campaign, Street Nurses wants to raise €45,000 for the construction of a “home module”, and believes that modular housing is an innovative solution that goes one step closer to ending homelessness.

[VIDEO] Street Nurses contributes to the end of homelessness in Brussels and Liege, by accompanying homeless people who are very vulnerable in terms of health, towards their reintegration into stable housing.

In June 2021, Anderlecht and Forest were the first municipalities in the Brussels Region to grant a building permit for modular housing projects managed by Infirmiers de rue. Since then, the project in Forest has continued to grow.
