The plan for drinking water fountains and free public toilets in Brussels: an essential tool for people experiencing homelessness
Drinking water and sanitation: why it’s vital in Brussels
At Street Nurses, we know how essential access to drinking water and free public toilets is for people experiencing homelessness. In 2025, this remains a crucial challenge. That’s why we’re publishing an updated edition of our map of drinking water fountains and free public toilets.
Hygiene and dignity guaranteed through free facilities
For Street Nurses, these facilities are not mere infrastructure. They are essential levers for health, dignity and recovery. As our coordinator Emilie Meessen explains: “Without access to drinking water and toilets, it is very difficult for people living on the street to take care of their hygiene. This map helps them hold on until they have stable housing with running water and sanitary facilities again.” We also work to support these individuals toward stable, long-term housing.
A useful map for everyone, an opportunity to raise awareness
Although our map primarily serves people experiencing homelessness, it also benefits walkers, tourists and Brussels residents. We hope to raise awareness of the daily reality of those without housing and encourage everyone to join our actions.
Effective collaboration for maximum impact
The 2025 map is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Street Nurses, Brussels Environment, Vivaqua, the Heroes for Good Foundation and dedicated volunteers who checked every facility on the ground. Thanks to partnerships with STIB and JCDecaux, this map is widely displayed and easily accessible.
