An urgent issue in Belgium and Wallonia

Homelessness and inadequate housing continue to increase across Belgium. The latest counts estimate that more than 21,000 people are without a home in Flanders, nearly 19,000 in Wallonia and nearly 10,000 in Brussels. Behind these figures are thousands of people facing life paths marked by precarity, housing breakdowns and a lack of sustainable solutions. In Wallonia, frontline organisations are witnessing worsening difficulties in accessing housing, an increase in the number of women, young people and children affected, as well as growing saturation of support and accommodation services.

Social housing as a lever to end homelessness

Faced with this reality, social housing is a major lever to enable sustainable exits from homelessness and strengthen access to housing for the most precarious people. Based on the findings of the latest Belgian counts, this round table will offer a reflection focused on Walloon challenges related to access to housing and the role of social housing in policies to combat homelessness.

Objectives of the event

The objectives of this event include: Presenting the main findings of the latest counts on homelessness in Belgium and Wallonia. Questioning the current responses provided to people experiencing homelessness and the obstacles they face in accessing housing. Discussing the role of social housing in pathways towards stabilisation and sustainable exits from homelessness. Encouraging dialogue between non-profit, institutional, political and social housing actors in order to identify levers for action to be developed in Wallonia.

Who is this round table for?

This event is open to professionals from the social and housing sectors, people affected by homelessness, political and institutional representatives, non-profit organisations, researchers, students, journalists and anyone interested in issues related to the right to housing and the fight against homelessness.
