While the year-end season is a time of togetherness for many, the number of people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in Belgium continues to grow. In Brussels, nearly 1,000 people sleep on the streets every day, and more than 9,000 others live in precarious conditions in temporary shelters — a fivefold increase in sixteen years. In Liège, at least 500 people are affected. Overall, homelessness and housing insecurity in Belgium are estimated at around 50,000 people.

Social support is under more pressure than ever, even as the situation keeps getting worse. To draw attention to this reality and back durable solutions, the non-profit Infirmiers de rue is launching its new awareness and fundraising campaign today: “We must rehouse them!”

Homelessness is rising, social support is shrinking

“We are seeing two trends that reinforce each other: the number of people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity is increasing, and some political measures risk amplifying this further. At the same time, social support is being reduced. But homelessness is not inevitable. We prove that every day.”

For nearly 20 years, Infirmiers de rue has been supporting the most vulnerable people living on the streets. Through intensive follow-up, a strong focus on health, and long-term support, the organisation is able to help even people facing complex challenges move into stable housing.
To date, more than 230 people have regained a lasting home.

A future starts with a home

The new campaign visual shows a small house made of coins and banknotes. It conveys the idea that every donation becomes a building block in the future of someone who is living on the streets today.
“For people who have been homeless for years, housing is not the finish line — it’s the starting point.”

“It’s the foundation for recovering health, stability and the possibility to rebuild. But for that to happen, homes must be available — and long-term support must remain possible.”

New campaign: “We must rehouse them!”

The campaign invites citizens and companies to invest together in sustainable solutions. Because rehousing works — but it requires resources and continuity.

“Our work can only keep growing if public support grows with it. We hope many people will join forces to support this mission.”

The campaign is funded thanks to the support of partners such as KBC Brussels, the National Lottery, Interparking, CHC Group, Prefer, AB Tech, CBC.

Advertising space is provided free of charge or at a strongly reduced rate by several media outlets. The campaign is visible through posters, press ads, media inserts, TV spots and social-media publications.
